ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Well Bills Mafia, you could be the new owner of a piece of turf at New Era Field.
You may have heard that the turf at New Era is in the process of being replaced and the county is now looking to donate and auction off the old turf.
The old turf was put down in 2011.
Under the stadium lease with the Bills, the county puts aside $3 million annually for stadium maintenance and upgrades, which this year includes new turf.
When some county legislators learned the turf would be replaced, they questioned why not sell it?
REPORTER: What would be done with the proceeds?
"So there's precedent for people getting pieces of the field," said Erie County Legislator Joseph Lorigo. "My suggestion was to take the proceeds from any auction and put it towards charities that work with underprivileged children or children with disabilities to get them out there moving and participating in outdoor sports."
In a tweet Wednesday from Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz the field is bare.
The county says the old turf is being stored right now at ECC South.
Not all of it is usable, some of the turf was lost during the removal process.
A few unanswered questions, we don't know exactly when this resolution will be presented for approval by the legislature.
We also don't know exactly what ECC would do with the turf or how the auction is going to work, and whether it will be online or in person.
The NFL says there are no league restrictions on what the county can do with the turf, since it is county property.
