Slightly more New York students now in college tuition-free

Authorities say slightly more students are going to college tuition-free in the second year of New York state's Excelsior Scholarship program.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Authorities say slightly more students are going to college tuition-free in the second year of New York state's Excelsior Scholarship program.

SUNY officials estimate between 22,000 and 25,000 students received scholarships last fall to attend State University of New York or City University of New York schools.

The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester reports that compares to under 22,000 students who received the free tuition in the fall of 2017.

The Excelsior program championed by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo covers the remainder of a student's more than $6,000 tuition after other aid is applied. Students from families who make under $110,000 are eligible. The income threshold rises to $125,000 in the fall.
