BUFFALO, N.Y. — High School graduation season will soon be upon us and there's that one question every upcoming graduate always asks.
"What side does the tassel go on before graduation?"
According to Cap and Gown Direct, it depends on what type of school you are graduating from.
If you're a high school student, the tassel goes on the right before your graduation ceremony. Once you've received your diploma, you move the tassel from the right to left.
For college students earning an undergraduate degrees. The tassel will start on the right and then either during or after the commencement ceremonies, students will be told to move their tassels to the left side.
For college students earing a post-graduate degree, tassels are on the left side of the cap and stay there for the duration of the ceremony.
Did you know that the cap is also called a 'morterboard'? Earlier versions of the cap had a stiff crown to make it easier to wear atop the head. Later versions offer a soft crown, which makes it easier to store, according to the The Intercollegiate Registry of Academic Costume
