'Increasing demand': D'Youville University gets approved for new Masters program

The school will welcome Speech Language Pathology grad students in the Fall of 2024.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — D’Youville University's new Speech Language Pathology Master’s program has been approved with classes starting in Fall 2024.

The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CAA-ASHA) approved D’Youville’s candidacy.

“Speech-language pathologists play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for countless individuals,” D’Youville President Lorrie Clemo, PhD, said. “We are thrilled to offer this program to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals in this field.”

According to DU, speech-language pathologists are in high demand. These communication experts serve various people including those with stroke, neurological disorders, autism, and learning English as a second language.

The field is expected to grow 19% through 2032, which is faster than other jobs, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

D’Youville said its program is unique as it focuses on inter-professional collaboration. As noted by DU, students will learn alongside other healthcare studies to prepare students for a “comprehensive approach” to patients.

“Our students will gain invaluable hands-on experience through on-campus labs, simulations, and diverse clinical placements,” program director Lorraine Book said. “This immersive approach will equip our graduates with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in their careers.”

Graduates will also have the ability to work in different areas like schools, hospitals, and private practices, adds D’Youville.
