BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Police Athletic League on Saturday awarded a scholarship in memory of Buffalo Police Lt. Craig Lehner.
Mohamed Mohamed is this year's scholarship award winner. The East Community High School senior plans to begin a career in law enforcement.
"I want to be a police officer," Mohamed said. "Currently, I'm applying to different colleges like ECC, Buff State, and Canisius. I want to become an officer one day, a police officer, just help out in the community the same way I see other officers do."
The scholarship was created to help those wanting to go into careers of criminal justice, law, and political science.
Lehner died in a dive training accident in the Niagara River on Oct. 13, 2017. He was the handler for the K-9 Shield, who served the City of Buffalo from 2016 until 2022 when he retired. Shield died back in May.
