ALBION, N.Y. — After three middle schoolers were charged with conspiring to attack their school, the Albion Central School District superintendent wants to ensure parents that the safety of students and staff is their top priority.
On November 8, police announced the three students at the Middle School were charged with conspiring to attack the school and kill and injure students and staff.
Albion Central School District superintendent Michael Bonnewell invited parents to come to the school Tuesday night "to review the situation and engage in a conversation designed to assist parents in helping their children feel safe and cope in these uncertain times," Bonnewell said in a letter.
The superintendent, police and mental health professionals fielded questions for parents, many who say they deserve to know more.
One parent asked, "Should these students be expelled — will we be notified if they are allowed back to school?" That question, among others, could not be given a straightforward answer given the legal cases are still unfolding.
Many parents at the meeting raised concerns over the district's handling of the threats. But police say they released information when they did and how they did to tell parents as much as possible without compromising the investigation.
The three students who were charged remain suspended. Albion Police have provided additional officers on campus and counselors were provided to any student who needed one, according to the letter.
"We are grateful to those students and parents who have shared information they have regarding this or any other possible safety issue,” Bonnewell said in the letter. “We invite everyone in our school community to share any information they have that causes concerns to the appropriate school building or my office.”
Since the threats were made, police have increased security throughout the district. The superintendent assured parents that safety of students, staff and visitors to the schools remain a top priority.
