Cuomo addresses increasing threat of Lake Ontario flooding

The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has deployed 70,000 more sandbags, two six-inch pumps directly to Monroe County.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Governor Andrew Cuomo on Saturday visited the Rochester area to address the increasing threat of flooding along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

There, he announced his deployment of more state resources to help the communities that border Lake Ontario.

The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has deployed 70,000 more sandbags and two six-inch pumps directly to Monroe County.

The governor says this is an issue that isn't going to go away anytime soon.

"We have to think about building back better than before and different than before," Cuomo said.

"What was a satisfactory retaining wall is no longer a satisfactory retaining wall. We're going to have to think about rebuilding our shorelines to a higher capacity. That is the new reality that we're dealing with."

The New York National Guard will also have 100 members activated by tomorrow to help support operations along the lake.
