WEST SENECA, N.Y. — A Cheektowaga man was charged with attempted murder following an altercation that started inside a grocery store, then spilled out into the parking lot.

Charges now faced by 24-year-old Timothy Barry of Cheektowaga include attempted murder, assault, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, and obstructing governmental administration.

Those charges stem from an incident that happened past 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to West Seneca Police. They were called to a parking lot on the 800 block of Harlem Road following a report of a man chasing someone with a knife.

Police said it started as a "minor physical altercation" inside of the Tops Friendly Market, before Barry followed three juveniles outside, to the parking lot. That's where they said Barry "poured a drink on and then threw a metal thermos at a 17-year-old juvenile victim," police said in a news release.

After that, police say Barry "pulled out a knife, threatened to kill the victim, and chased the victim throughout the parking lot while attempting to stab them."

Police added that Barry allegedly stabbed one person in the hand before they fled the scene. The injury was not considered to be life-threatening.

"During the investigation, Barry became irate and became physically combative while being searched," West Seneca Police said, adding that he was found to be in possession of a a folding knife and a box cutter.

Barry was arraigned Wednesday morning in West Seneca Justice Court. He's being held at the Erie County Holding Center on $7,500 bail and pending a felony hearing on Friday.

A search of the New York State electric court filing system on Wednesday did not show any future court dates for Barry.
