Former Town of Tonawanda code enforcement officer receives probation for having illegal weapons

The 45-year-old man was a previous senior code enforcement officer for the Town of Tonawanda. He was placed on administrative leave following his arrest.

TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A former Town of Tonawanda code enforcement officer has been sentenced to probation for having illegal assault weapons. 

Kristopher D. Kinsella, 45, was sentenced to five years probation on each count he is charged on in State Supreme Court Friday. He pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree in October. 

Back on May 4, 2023, Town of Tonawanda Police responded to a domestic incident at Kinsella's home.  While investigating, officers seized three pistols, two semi-automatic rifles, and a shotgun from the home. Investigators say the semi-automatic rifles are considered illegal assault weapons they had detachable magazines and pistol grips. 

At the time of the incident, Kinsella was employed as a senior code enforcement officer in the town. Following his arrest, he was place on administrative leave and later fired from his job in June of 2023. 

In addition to probation, which will run concurrently, an order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim for the next eight years.
