Suspected fentanyl seized by Buffalo Police in arrest

Two search warrants executed on Tuesday by the Narcotics and Intelligence Unit led to the arrest of Giovanni Ortiz, 29, of Buffalo.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Police on Tuesday recovered in excess of half an ounce of suspected cocaine and in excess of half an ounce of suspected fentanyl in the arrest of Giovanni Ortiz, 29, of Buffalo. 

Two search warrants executed by the Narcotics and Intelligence Unit, as a part of a long-term investigation, led to his arrest on Tuesday. The first search warrant was executed by ECSO personnel and Buffalo Police at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies recovered a loaded Mini Draco AK47 pistol, loaded magazines, crack cocaine and scales at a commercial garage on Rhode Island St. 

A second search warrant was executed at approximately 8:30 p.m. at a residence on Jersey Street, where deputies recovered amounts of suspected cocaine and fentanyl. Deputies also seized cut, baggies, scales, a loaded Micro Draco semiautomatic pistol, and U.S. currency at the scene. The total amount of currency has not yet been determined, according to the ECSO.

Ortiz was detained without incident during a traffic stop. He was transported to the Erie County Holding Center and charged with the following:

  • 3rd Degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (4 counts) 
  • 4th Degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 
  • 2nd Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon 
  • 3rd Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon (5 counts) 
  • 2nd Degree Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia (4 counts)
