HAMBURG, N.Y. — The Town of Hamburg Police Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting at a residence on McKinley Parkway near Willet Road.
Captain Ehret with the Town of Hamburg Police, assisted by New York State Police in a news conference, shared that at 10:30 a.m. Friday, a 911 call led officers with the Town of Hamburg to a Willet Road residence where a burglary was in progress.
Officers were given a description of the burglary suspect by the homeowner. Upon arriving at the scene officers noticed an open door to the residence. Announcing themselves as they entered, an officer encountered a female, which led to an altercation.
Because of the altercation, the officer discharged a firearm, striking the female suspect.
First aid was administered, and EMS arrived on the scene to take over advanced life support, where the female was soon after pronounced deceased at the scene.
New York Attorney General Letitia James released a statement Friday night, saying the state has started an investigation and that a knife had been recovered at the scene by Hamburg Police officers.
"At 10:38 a.m. on February 2, HPD officers responded to a reported burglary at a residence in the Town of Hamburg," the Attorney General's Office said. "Officers then followed a potential suspect, a woman, to another residence nearby.
"When police entered the house, they encountered the woman in the bathroom. After a struggle, an officer discharged his service weapon, striking the woman. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers recovered a knife at the scene."
