NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Niagara Falls Police Department is investigating a suspicious death.
Police arrived at a residence on Calumet Avenue around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday morning and found Jessie Richardson, 69, dead on his bedroom floor.
Richardson was a well known person in the community who was known for mentoring youth, and he also operated a nearby restaurant on Highland Avenue.
Police say the case is being investigated as a homicide. Detectives have been conducting interviews with neighbors and family members, and collecting potential evidence.
Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster released the following statement:
"It is with great sadness that we heard the tragic news of the untimely death of Jessie Richardson," said Dyster. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and many friends, who have suffered this grievous loss during what should be a joyous holiday season. Jessie was a pillar of the business and culinary communities, and a stalwart of Highland Avenue, but his loss will be mourned by people of all walks of life in all parts of the city. On behalf of all the citizens of the city he loved, I offer my deepest sympathies, and most sincere hopes that his legacy in the community will long be remembered and honored."
Police say an autopsy will be performed, but one has not been scheduled at this time.
Niagara County Legislator Owen Steed also released a statement, saying:
"This is a sad day for Niagara Falls and the Highland Ave community," said Niagara County Legislator Owen Steed. "Jesse was such a pillar in our community and will be extremely missed. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."
