BUFFALO, N.Y. — An East High School student is in the hospital after being attacked Tuesday at MLK Park.
Police say a number of people were involved in the fight. The boy suffered a broken collarbone and head injuries, and he is now being treated at Oishei's Children's Hospital.
Buffalo Public Schools released a statement about the assault, calling it a "community crisis and senseless violence."
The district went on to say that it is actively working with police so that those responsible can be held accountable.
Buffalo Common Council member Zeneta Everhart, who represents the Masten District, also issued a statement following news of the boy's assault.
“I am deeply saddened to learn about the brutal attack on a young boy at Martin Luther King Jr. Park yesterday," Everhart said. "As a mother and the Council Woman of this district, I unequivocally condemn this violence. As the Chair of the Education Committee it has been my mission to address these issues and this disgusting display of violence only underscores my commitment to do more for our youth. Teen violence is a pressing crisis in our City that we must address together."
Everhart said she has contacted Buffalo Police and the victim's family.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this young boy during this incredibly difficult time," she said. "I am in touch with both the family and Buffalo Police Commissioner Gramaglia as the investigation unfolds. We need to stand united as a community to ensure the safety of our children and work towards preventing such incidents in the future."
