BUFFALO, NY- A Buffalo man accused of killing a 13-month-old boy five years ago was formally charged with the crime Tuesday,
Police say Raymond Gonzalez, 37, beat his then-girlfriend's son to death while babysitting him in May of 2010. Gonzalez was arrested in connection to the case last week.
Prosecutors say Gonzalez "engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of serious physical injury to" the child, but didn't release any other details.
"Whenever you see a child, it really takes it to another level in this job and makes it very, very difficult. But that's what we do and we're going to proceed forward with it and we go from there. You don't get a more innocent victim than a child," James Bargnesi, James Bargnesi, Homicide Bureau Chief for the Erie County District Attorney's office said.
Gonzalez faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
