A Castile man accused of trying to kill the Wyoming County Sheriff was in court Thursday for his arraignment.
Lynn Hall was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, attempted assault, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, attempted criminal possession of a weapon and menacing a police officer.
Hall would not enter a plea, so the judge issued a plea of not guilty on his behalf.
Police say Lynn Hall was tailgating and flashing his lights at Wyoming County Sheriff Gregory Rudolph earlier this month on State Route 238 as the Sheriff was on his way to work.
Sheriff Rudolph says he pulled over to see if Hall needed help, and Hall pulled in front and blocked him.
Police say Hall got out of his car, met Sheriff Rudolph at the door of his police vehicle, and started a physical altercation. Hall allegedly tried to get Sheriff Rudolph's gun as they both continued to struggle to the ground at the side of the road. Hall ended up on top of the Sheriff with a knife threatening to kill him.
Sheriff Rudolph says he recognized Hall as someone who had just applied for a pistol permit, and came to the office just the day before.
During the fight, police say two civilians stopped and helped the sheriff, along with an off-duty New York State Trooper.
Hall was remanded back to the Chautauqua County Jail on $500,000 bail or $1 million bond.
Sheriff Rudolph suffered some injuries in the incident, but is back at work.
