BUFFALO, N.Y. — A man who was in prison for killing five people with mail bombs in 1993 has died in prison.
Michael T. Stevens died in a federal prison on October 26, 2024, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was 83 years old.
Stevens was convicted by a jury in 1995. He was given a life sentence without parole for Transportation of Dynamite and Detonators with Intent to Kill and Damage Property with a Destructive Device.
According to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, all of the bombs were shipped by mail or US carrier, with one going by taxi to various places in the WNY region. The packages included dynamite inside wrapped fishing tackle boxes and targeted relatives of a girlfriend who had broken up with him prior to the bombings.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons issued this statement following Stevens' death to 2 On Your Side. "We can confirm Michael T. Stevens is no longer in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was pronounced deceased on October 26, 2024. The last facility where he was incarcerated was the United States Penitentiary (USP) Tucson. Our office does not share specifics regarding the cause of death for any individual. The official cause of death is determined by the medical examiner and not the Federal Bureau of Prisons."
