Buffalo man pleads guilty to stealing mail looking for money and gift cards

Eric Steven Arroyo, 41, pleaded guilty to theft of mail in Federal Court Wednesday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo man has admitted to stealing mail from USPS collection boxes looking for money and gift cards. 

Eric Steven Arroyo, 41, pleaded guilty to theft of mail in Federal Court Wednesday. 

On July 27, 2023, the US Postal Service received a report that Arroyo was opening the blue collection mailboxes with a key and taking mail out. 

A postal employee went to check it out and saw Arroyo near collection bin in the area, open it and remove mail. Arroyo was then observed going behind a nearby business and opened the mail.  

Police were called and Arroyo was arrested. 

UFFALO, N.Y. - U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Eric Steven Arroyo, 41, of Buffalo, NY, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer to theft of mail, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Arroyo will be sentenced at a later date.  He could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
