BUFFALO, N.Y. — A case that angered a lot of Western New Yorkers got national attention Friday afternoon, here on Channel 2.
Dr. Phil focused Friday's program on what many see as lenient sentences, and that includes Leslie Camp, whose daughter was raped by a classmate at Niagara Wheatfield High School. The teen who raped her only received a year of probation.
2 On Your Side is continuing to not identify him because his record could be sealed as a youthful offender after that probation.
Leslie called that a "time-out" for a serious crime, and was especially angry that the rapist was allowed back to class with her.
"I was assured that they were going to keep him away from her all school year, that they were not going to keep him in close proximity to each other, and that they would protect her. That principal placed her in in-school suspension to keep her safe. Let's not put the rapist in in-school suspension. Let's put the victim in, keeping her out of her classes, taking her out of instruction, and letting her sit there all day," said Leslie on the show.
Niagara Wheatfield's principal resigned earlier this month after criticism of his decision to let the rapist return to school.
