Governor Hochul announces shootings with injuries are down 29% in the state

New York State also secured a nearly $350 million investment to reduce gun violence
Rochester Police said they have not yet arrested a suspect.

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday shooting incidents with injury have declined 29% across New York State for communities participating in New York's Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative. The data is from a seven-month period from January to July for 2023 and 2024.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe is my top priority,” Governor Hochul said. “Our comprehensive efforts to bring down gun violence are working and I’ll never stop fighting to ensure safe communities all across our state.”

New York State’s GIVE initiative supports 28 police departments in 21 counties with the majority of the state’s population outside New York City. Only data from GIVE communities were used for the report.

In Western New York, Rochester police department reported a 35% decline. The following departments also reported significant declines in shootings:

  • Yonkers: 57% decline
  • Nassau County: 56% decline
  • Suffolk County: 50% decline
  • Syracuse: 32% decline

There was also a 21% decline in the number of people killed by gun violence in GIVE communities during that same time period.

In addition to the decline in gun violence, Hochul announced the state has secured $347 million to fund a plan to address gun violence, reduce crime and improve public safety. The money comes from the FY25 Enacted Budget

The Governor’s investments will include nationally recognized initiatives administered by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). It will provide funding, training and technical assistance to law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations in areas with high gun violence crime.

A breakdown of where the $347 million investment will be used includes the following:

  • Nearly $36 million to Gun Involved Violence Initiative (GIVE)
  • $21 million to SNUG Street Outreach Program
  • $18 million to Crime Analysis Centers
  • Up to $20 million to Project RISE
