Holiday driving safety being increased by Governor Hochul

Halloween is one of the most dangerous nights not only for trick-or-treaters but also for those behind the wheel.

NEW YORK — Governor Kathy Hochul has issued safer driving restrictions during Halloween when drivers and children are more at risk.

Starting Friday, October 27 through Halloween, reckless driving will be monitored at a higher level.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that Halloween is one of the deadliest record nights due to the high number of impaired drivers on the roads.

Funds from the Traffic Safety Committee to provide more security from the New York State Police and local law enforcement.

There will be a higher number of sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols, which will include an increase in searching for people who may be texting and driving as well.

New York State Police Acting Superintendent, Dominick L. Chiumento, says that Troopers will be highly visible throughout the Halloween weekend and actively looking for impaired and reckless drivers.

State Police will be on the lookout for marked and unmarked vehicles that can blend in with other drivers.

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, Mark J.F. Schroeder says that it is important to be aware of your surroundings and plan accordingly.

"Remember that choosing to drive after you’ve been drinking or if you have consumed cannabis puts not only yourself at risk, but also anyone else you come in contact with at risk," Schroeder said.

Governor Hochul is also reminding drivers to move over for emergency vehicles and those stopped roadside with their hazards on.
