Former Senate candidate charged under SAFE Act appears in court

A former candidate for State Senate in New York charged with allegedly violating the SAFE act appeared in court Friday.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY-- A former candidate for State Senate in New York charged with allegedly violating the SAFE act appeared in court Friday.

Niagara Falls Police say Gia Arnold was arrested Wednesday night after police say she had an AR-15 rifle, handgun and combat knife in her vehicle.

Arnold's attorney requested the weapon/obstructed charges against her be dropped, but the motion was dismissed. Arnold was released and has a preliminary hearing in March.

Arnold ran as a Republican in the race to replace retiring Senator George Maziarz in 2014. She withdrew after it was revealed she was having an affair, but re-entered the race a week later.

Another person who was in the car, Halim Johnson, 18, was also charged and both were arraigned Friday morning.
