Police: Fatal shooting spurs citywide pursuit, search for items in Buffalo River

While several people are in custody, no arrests have been made at this time, according to Buffalo Police.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A fatal shooting, a pursuit across the city, and a search for firearms and other items in the Buffalo River ended with several people in custody on Saturday afternoon in Buffalo.

The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. on the 200 block of Bird Avenue, near Grant Street and Forest Avenue. Officers who responded to the scene found a 21-year-old man who had been shot while outside.

The man was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he later died, Buffalo Police said in a statement.

"Detectives say that the suspects fled in a vehicle, but patrol officers were able to match the description of the suspect's vehicle, and a pursuit ensued through different parts of the city," police said.

That chase eventually led to the outbound Skyway, where police say suspects tossed firearms and contraband out of the vehicle's windows. Some items landed in the Buffalo River, police said.

The suspects then got out of the vehicle on Route 5 and started to run. All of them were eventually taken into custody.

The Buffalo Police Underwater Recovery Team was still on the scene, in the river near Fuhrmann Boulevard, as they searched Saturday evening for items that were thrown out of the vehicle by the suspects.

At least two guns, some drugs, and other evidence have been recovered so far, police said.

Anyone with information on the shooting, or other crime in the city, is asked to call or text the Confidential TIPCALL Line at 716-847-2255.

While several people are in custody, no arrests have been made in connection to what happened Saturday afternoon.
