Driver identified in fatal Amherst crash

Amherst Police responded to a fatal car crash at 9:40 p.m. on Sheridan Drive and Esjay Road Monday night.

AMHERST, New York — Amherst Police responded to a fatal car crash on Sheridan Drive and Esjay Road Monday night. 

The call to police was received around 9:40 p.m. 

When officials arrived at the scene they could see a 2019 Honda CRV that had been turning westbound from Sheridan Drive onto southbound Esjay Road, hit a 2008 Chevy Impala that was driving eastbound on Sheridan Drive. 

After the collision the Impala had burst into flames. The driver of the Impala, a 23-year-old male from Williamsville, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The Honda CRV driver, a 35-year-old male from Amherst, was taken to ECMC with non-life threatening injuries. There was also a 3-year-old passenger in the CRV, who was taken to ECMC with critical injuries. The child was later transferred to Oishei Hospital where they are now listed in critical but stable condition. 

No charges have been filed at this time. 

The 23-year-old driver has been identified as Marcus Powell of Williamsville. 

Amherst Police are investigating the cause of the crash, and looking for any witnesses with dash-camera footage of the area or incident to contact them at (716)-689-1311. 

Amherst Police were assisted by the Main Transit Fire Department, and Twin City Ambulance at the crash scene.
