Erie County Sheriff's Office provides warning about new phone scam

The sheriff's office says anyone who gets this call should immediately hang up.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Erie County Sheriff's Office on Thursday issued a warning about a new phone scam.

The sheriff's office said it has received a number of reports in the last 24 hours about this particular scam. Law enforcement personnel said someone who identifies themselves as Captain Greg Savage with the sheriff's department calls, then asks people to call him back about an urgent matter.

This is a scam. There is no Captain Savage, there is no Erie County Sheriff's Department, and the fictitious captain says he's with the "Erie County Sheriff’s Department Warrants and Citations Division."

The sheriff's office stresses that anyone who gets this call should immediately hang up.
