Jury finds Amherst woman guilty in newborn's death

A 32-year-old Amherst woman has been found guilty after she gave birth in a bathroom and discarded the dead newborn in a trash can.

AMHERST, N.Y. — A 32-year-old Amherst woman has been found guilty by a jury for murdering her newborn baby, according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office

Andee R. Wright had been found guilty on one count of murder in the second degree. The Jury deliberated for two hours following a week long trial.

The incident happened in October of 2020. The The Erie County District Attorney's Office says Wright intentionally killed her newborn after giving birth alone inside a bathroom in a home on Eggert Road in the Town of Tonawanda.

Investigators say Wright did not call 911 for medical assistance for herself or the baby. They said it was not until later that morning when her boyfriend found her in distress that then 911 was called. She was taken to a hospital by an ambulance and a paramedic later found the deceased baby in a garbage can in the basement of the home.

An autopsy by the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office found that the baby was born alive, and had died from blunt force trauma to the head.

“This is a disturbing case of a woman who concealed her pregnancy and killed her own newborn baby. While this was a challenging case, we were committed to obtaining justice in the death of Baby Boy Wright. The evidence showed that the baby was born alive and the jury agreed that defendant intentionally murdered of her own newborn son,” said Acting Erie County DA Mike Keane.

Wright now faces 25 years to life in prison when she goes to be sentenced on September 9. Until then she is being held without bail pending her sentence.
