Counterfeit Bills gear seized by local US Border and Customs Protection Officers

The package, containing fake jerseys, was intercepted in Rochester.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Today, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials here in Buffalo, are warning fans about counterfeit gear, after intercepting a package full of it in Rochester.

"They were able to determine that the items were of really low quality and they were able to figure out that they were counterfeit," said Officer Giorgio Fuda, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Buffalo Field Office, Communications Office.

The package included jerseys of fan favorites - including nine Dion Dawkins jerseys, six Von Miller, and three Matt Milano.

"Some stitching was missing, the patches were falling off. The officers are really good at picking these items out," said Officer Fuda.

Border and Customs officials say transporting and selling counterfeit goods is not only illegal on a federal level, but in New York State, it's a misdemeanor and possibly a felony.

"There's criminal repercussions for this. They could go to jail and face fines," said Officer Fuda.

And for consumers... what seems like a good deal could cost in the long run.

"Counterfeit products don't meet quality and safety standards. They could be putting whatever they want in there just to make a buck," said Officer Fuda.

So, what's the best way to avoid ending up with counterfeit gear? Officers say it's all about doing your homework.

"The consumer should beware, do their diligence, do their research, make sure they're purchasing from a reputable merchant. Especially with the online era," said Officer Fuda.
