Cheektowaga Police named in lawsuit filed by family of a woman shot to death in 2022

In October of 2022, Keaira Hudson Bennefield was shot to death. Now her family is suing her estranged husband and the Town of Cheektowaga.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In October 2022, Keaira Hudson Bennefield was shot to death.

Now her family is suing her estranged husband, Adam Bennefield. He is behind bars awaiting to stand trial for her murder in November.

Tammie Hudson, mother of the victim is also suing the Town of Cheektowaga and the Cheektowaga Police Department.

According to the lawsuit, "on October 3, 2022, decedent (Keaira)  contacted the town of CHEEKTOWAGA POLICE DEPARTMENT to report a violent domestic incident  involving ADAM BENNEFIELD for physically assaulting her to the point that she believed that she was going to die."

The court document also said there is "video evidence and compelling statements" from the victim.

Hudson believes the town was "wrongful, reckless, negligent and/or careless in failing to properly charge Defendant, ADAM BENNEFIELD SR." This is relation to an incident in September 2022.

"As a result of the wrongful, reckless, negligent, and careless acts and/or omissions of the Defendants, Plaintiff has sustained significant damages, including but not limited to the wrongful death of Plaintiff's decedent, pain and suffering, psychological damages, mental and emotional pain and suffering, lost wages, loss of future support and services, economic loss, funeral costs, and medical expenses."

Two days an incident in October, at 8:30 a.m., Keaira was shot and killed in front of her children.

Hudson "demands judgment against the Defendants for the within cause of action, each of them jointly and severally, including the costs and disbursements of the instant action in an amount that exceeds the jurisdictional limits of all other courts, and for any such further relief that this Court deems just and proper."
