Buffalo woman indicted in connection to a fatal hit-and-run incident in Cheektowaga

Iyanna R. Scott, 21, of Buffalo was arraigned Friday morning in State Supreme Court.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo woman was indicted Friday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run incident that happened last month.

Iyanna R. Scott, 21, of Buffalo was arraigned Friday morning in State Supreme Court. She's been charged with one felony count of murder, one violent felony count of attempted murder, and one felony count of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting resulting in death, the Erie County District Attorney's Office said Friday.

Scott was indicted in connection to an incident that happened around 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. That's when prosecutors say she drove to a car wash on the 2200 block of Walden Avenue in the Town of Cheektowaga with two men.

The district attorney's office said Scott got into an argument with one of the men outside the car wash, adding that when it turned physical, both men walked away.

They "crossed the street and proceeded to walk westbound on Walden Avenue across Union Road," the DA's office said, adding that she followed the men while driving a Hyundai Elantra.

Prosecutors said she accelerated her vehicle the men crossed Union Road. One of the men, 21-year-old Demario Patterson, was struck. He was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he later died.

"The defendant allegedly drove away from the scene without reporting the incident to police. The vehicle was later found on Briscoe Avenue in the City of Buffalo," the DA's office said.

Scott is being held without bail. A search of the New York State electric court filing system on Friday shows that Scott was assigned a defense attorney and that she was arrested on Thursday.

Scott faces up to 25 years in prison, if convicted on the highest charge.

"This is a totally senseless crime. This defendant allegedly knew these two victims, was driving around with them prior to the crime, and then intentionally drove her vehicle toward them as they defenselessly crossed the street. My thoughts remain with the family and friends of the young man who tragically lost his life. Thankfully, the surviving victim and no one else was injured on the road that day," Acting Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane said.
