Former Buffalo Police officer pleads guilty to insurance fraud

The misdemeanor charge is connected to a false claim about a truck robbery that didn't happen.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A former Buffalo Police officer on Wednesday morning pleaded guilty to insurance fraud.

Dewayne Raye, 34, of Buffalo entered the guilty plea in Erie County Court. The misdemeanor charge is connected to a false claim about a truck robbery that didn't happen.

Prosecutors in the office of Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane said that last November, Raye told his auto insurance provider that somebody stole his 2021 Dodge Ram pickup truck. What actually happened is that Raye sold his truck without giving the Suffolk County buyer the vehicle title.

Police flagged the truck as stolen, and investigators discovered that Raye lied before he got any insurance money.

Raye agreed to resign as a Buffalo Police officer in a plea deal. He now faces up to one year in jail when he's sentenced on Dec. 19.
