Buffalo Police arrest 20 for illegal guns; recover 19 firearms in first two weeks of June

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia says the number of illegal guns recovered, compared to last year, is up so far in 2024.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In the first two weeks of June, 20 people have been arrested on illegal gun charges.

19 guns were recovered in a variety of police operations that involved search warrants, swat teams, and traffic stops.

"We want to get that information out to the public on the amount of guns that we're taking off the street," Gramaglia said. "And what happens to them at their court arraignment."

Of the 20 people arrested so far in June, 10 have posted bail, 5 were remanded by the judge and 5 haven't posted bail yet.

"If we're going to make a dent in violent crime, if we're going to make a dent in reducing our shootings, we need to be very heavy handed with those that are illegally possessing guns, and that includes spending time in jail and staying in jail,"

As of May, Buffalo Police have recovered 376 illegal guns.

"Looking overall at the last three years, year to date, we are up in the number of guns taken in," Gramaglia said.

2 guns recovered during the June arrests were "ghost guns," according to Buffalo Police.

Gramaglia partially attributed the success of recent gun arrests to a state grant that Buffalo and other WNY law enforcement agencies received.

The state gave Buffalo, Amherst, Cheektowaga, Lackawanna and Erie County agencies $6.4M from the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative.

"That GIVE grant provides us with significant funding for overtime patrols," Gramaglia said. "They're out there, they're networking, they're engaging, and they're being very visible in the community."
