Inmate arrested for possession of prison contraband

The 24-year-old inmate had been searched following a visit in the contact visiting room and had a clear plastic bag containing what was suspected to be marijuana

BUFFALO, N.Y. — An inmate at the Erie County Holding Center was caught with prison contraband and arrested for it on January 3. 

Juan Rodriguez, a 24-year-old man, had been searched following a visit in the contact visiting room and had a clear plastic bag containing what was suspected to be marijuana. 

Officers also found a plastic soap wrapper on the floor under a table in the visitation room with what a K-9 detected as an unknown substance possibly narcotics tightly in the wrapper. 

Later on, when reviewing surveillance footage, it could be seen that Rodriguez had dropped something on the floor and moved it around with his foot under the visitation table he was at. 

The inmate has been charged with possession of a dangerous contraband in prison, and he will remain at the holding center until his arraignment at Buffalo City Court.

ECHC ARREST

INCARCERATED INDIVIDUAL ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF PRISON CONTRABAND Buffalo, NY - Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reports the arrest of 24-year-old, Juan Rodriguez of Buffalo, following an investigation at the Erie County Holding Center (ECHC). On January 3rd, 2023, during an investigation into the possession of prison contraband, Incarcerated Individual (I/I), Juan Rodriguez, was searched following a visit in the contact visiting room. I/I Rodriguez was found in possession of a clear plastic bag, containing suspected marijuana. Additionally, while searching the contact visitation room, a plastic soap wrapper was observed lying on the floor under visitation table #13. Closer inspection of the wrapper revealed what appeared to be a tightly wrapped ball of an unknown substance, which was alerted on by a narcotics detection K9. After reviewing surveillance footage of the contact visitation area, I/I Rodriguez was observed dropping the package on the floor and then moving it with his foot, underneath the visiting counter. I/I Rodriguez was charged with the following: -Possession of Dangerous Contraband in Prison-1st Degree - Class D Felony. I/I Rodriguez remained in custody at the ECHC pending his arraignment in Buffalo City Court
