Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation opens investigation following officer-involved shooting

A man was killed on Aug. 30, following an incident with officers of the Orchard Park Police Department.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — On Tuesday, the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation provided an update that it has opened an investigation into the death of a man who died on August 30, 2024.

The man was killed following an incident with officers of the Orchard Park Police Department.

According to the news release from OSI, at approximately 8:55 p.m. on August 30, officers were called to a home on Hawthorne Drive in Orchard Park.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw a man outside who allegedly had a knife in his hand. Officers told the man to drop the knife, but he did not comply.

The man reportedly moved toward the officers with the knife and officers fired their service weapons and shot the man. He was transferred to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officers recovered the alleged knife at the scene.

Over the weekend, the Orchard Park Police Department held a news conference to talk about what happened.

OSI said it assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.
