AMHERST, N.Y. — The Amherst Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam centered around gift cards.

The scam, police said on social media, involves people who are posing as police officers over phone calls. The scammers are "demanding immediate payment, often through gift cards."

That's a clear sign that it's a scam, police said.

"Please be aware that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never demand money over the phone or request payment via gift cards. This is a clear red flag for a scam," police said.

If you do receive such a phone call, do not provide any personal information or payment details. hang up, then contact police immediately.
