BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Police are investigating an incident that ended with two students being stabbed.
Buffalo Police were called to Main and Mohawk streets around 12:30 p.m. for a report of a large fight. Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said about 10 juveniles were allegedly assaulting another juvenile when that juvenile pulled out a knife and stabbed two of his attackers. One of the teens stabbed had to undergo surgery and is currently in stable condition.
Gramaglia says their initial investigation shows the stabbings appear to be in self-defense.
Gramaglia says the two juveniles stabbed were supposed to be in summer school at Burgard, but were not in attendance.
He admits this is an ongoing problem with teens and expressed concerns they have unfettered access to get wherever they want using bus passes provided to them that are supposed to be used to get them to school and then home again.
"We have had some school fights downtown. We have had stabbings involving Buffalo school students down on Main Street and down around that area, so for the last several years, we have put an actual after school detail of officers on overtime for the last several months," Gramaglia said.
He is urging parents to know where their children are at all times.
"I urge parents that if your kids are in summer school, know where they are, know what time school starts, know what time it ends, and ensure that your kids aren't going back home or wherever it is that they're supposed to be when school is out," he said.
Gramaglia expressed concern about the unfettered access students have to get anywhere in the city by using bus passes that are supposed to be used to get them to school and back home. He says he will be talking to the Buffalo Public Schools superintendent and the NFTA to address the issue.
There's no word yet on if any of the juveniles will be charged.
