Parents of Sweet Home students concerned about school safety

School safety has been a concern in many districts and that includes the Sweet Home Central School District. A parent speaks out after she says her son was assaulted

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Maria Vincent has concerns after her 12-year-old son was assaulted at Sweet Home Middle School by other students.

She says an incident on September 11 and 12 has her re-thinking if her son should return to the school building after the boy was, in her words, assaulted, for refusing to fight.

"The kid gets up and starts punching him in the back of the head and the back. From what I understand, he was also kicked in the head. Then they took my son into the nurse's office and the vice principal called me and said I just want to tell you your son did nothing wrong, but he was assaulted. She did not tell me the extent, so I went to the school and she showed me his back, which there was significant bruising on the right side of his back."

She took her son to a local emergency room where paperwork shows he had a concussion.

She says her son has special needs.

Vincent has three children in the district.

Dr. Michael Ginestre, superintendent of Sweet Home Central School District, said, "Any report of bullying, by a parent or any member of our school community, is taken seriously and dealt with immediately. If evidence of the bullying exists, we take the incident through our student discipline process. We cannot and will not discuss matters between students or any matter involving student discipline."
