BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An east side neighborhood will be getting a new community center thanks in part to a generous donation.
Dr. Daniel Alexander and his wife Gail announced a million-dollar gift to help build a new Seneca Babcock Community Center.
Dr. Alexander is a former Lieutenant in the Buffalo Fire Department. He later became an orthopedic surgeon and is now the President and CEO of the Finger Lakes Bone and Joint Center.
The new community center will be located at 82 Harrison Street. This is where the former Buffalo Public School #26 was located. The City of Buffalo previously invested $600,000 on demolition and construction costs relating to construction and demolition costs.
The current site of the community center in landlocked and cannot be expanded.
The new site allows for a new multi-purpose outdoor field for football, baseball, soccer and lacrosse. It will also have an outdoor court and new playground.
Inside there will be an expanded computer lab, recording studio and Black Box Theater.
Construction on the new Seneca Babcock Community Center is expected to begin in the summer of 2016. The new facility will be more than double the size of the current building.
