commUNITY spotlight: UB Women's hoop star Chellia Watson

Horns to to UB Bulls Chellia Watson who has racked up a lot of accolades this season.

Chellia Watson will tell you that she loves the game of basketball. "Basketball is everything to me. I've been loving it since I was a little girl."

Watson said she's always been a scorer, but "I'm not afraid to pass" the ball.

Watson ranks 4th in the entire country in scoring at 24.8 points per game, only behind Iowa star Caitlin Clark and standout freshmen in USC's Juju Watkins and Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo.

"When I get in a flow, it's basically just hard to stop. I want the ball back and I want to keep scoring in bunches."

When the University at Buffalo Bulls played on the road at Toledo,  Watson dropped a school-record 47 points. At the team's next home game, head coach Becky Burke presented her with a commemorative ball.

"Having a front-row seat. I've got the best seat in the house to see her doing what she's doing," Burke said.

This is Watson's first year on the court at UB after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules.

She came to Buffalo from USC Upstate, following her coach to Western New York after athletic director Mark Alnutt hired Burke in 2022.

"I'll never forget when Mark and I were talking throughout the process when he was like hey, you have anybody in mind you're going to bring in, you're going to have to fill some roster spots. I was like yeah, I've got the best player in the MAC that's going to come with me," the coach said. "I believed her, she believed in me, and we're still together now."

Now as Watson helps the Bulls pursue a MAC Championships and an NCAA Tournament berth, Burke believes Buffalo is witnessing a historic career.
