commUNITY spotlight: Canalside activities

There is so much to do during the summer in Buffalo at Canalside and many activities are free.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Waterfront has a variety of activities to encourage the community to stay active during the summer.

“There's so many things to do down at Canalside on a daily basis,” said General Manager of the Buffalo Waterfront Lauren Ford. “You can visit the vendors on the boardwalk, then we have a full programming and event lineup as well throughout the Summer.”

With a variety of free fitness classes from Tuesday to Saturday, the Waterfront has a packed schedule of activities and events. The Waterfront hosts classes from hula hooping and Zumba to boot camp.

Zumba classes have been popular, with Ford noting that up to 100 people participate weekly.

“If you're not a great dancer, you can definitely kind of get lost in the crowd,” she said.

“They bring the energy… It's a party every Tuesday.”

The Waterfront also organizes “EPIC Storytime” every Wednesday on the lawn to promote kids’ reading during the Summer. Plus, every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Explore & More - The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Children's Museum hosts Free Play Friday for children 10 and under. Ford encourages visitors to see the museum afterward.

The Buffalo Heritage Carousel is on the Waterfront with pay-what-you-can pricing starting at $1.

The Waterfront features the Seneca Chief, a traditional full replica of an 1800s-style Erie Canal ship. Guests can learn the history of the boat and the canal.

Visitors can venture on three different cruises such as family-friendly cruises, sunset cruises, and wine cruises that cater to different demographics of the City of Buffalo.

You will also find at Canalside,  a variety of local food and drink offerings.

“We're really excited to partner with local brands to bring our food and beverage operation up a notch this year,” she added.

New options include Resurgence and Nick Charlap’s ice cream.

To stay up to date on all that is happening on the Waterfront, Ford encourages those to follow the Buffalo Waterfront on social media or visit their website.
