Changes in Weather Cause Changes For Lake Erie Ice Cover

How Lake Erie's ice cover has drastically changed over the past couple weeks.
January 4th

Buffalo, NY -- Before the arctic blast during much of last week, only about a third of Lake Erie had ice on it, as of January 4th.

After that cold stretch a lot of ice formed and Lake Erie was mostly covered with ice on January 9th.

Temperatures warmed over the weekend, even into the 50's and some of the ice melted by January 12th.

Video taken of Lake Erie on Tuesday, January 14th showed even more ice melt which means lake effect snow can still develop.

Lake Erie is a moisture source for the development of snow. Now all we need is much colder air flowing over the warmer lake water for more snowfall to form.
