BUFFALO, N.Y. — 2 On Your Side is learning new information about what happened after a Buffalo Common Council member brought a gun onto school grounds last week.
The district is giving more of a timeline about what happened.
And there are questions about how much of a role Common Council member Ulysees Wingo will have at City Hall.
A spokesperson for Buffalo Schools says Wingo brought a gun and ammunition to Riverside High School last Tuesday.
He was there to attend an assembly.
District administrators didn't learn about the matter until the following day, and that was when 911 was called as well.
The district says that on Thursday, Buffalo Police were called to file a report, but when 2 On Your Side asked police Monday about whether one was actually filed, we were told no.
The principal at Riverside has been placed on administrative leave.
Sources tell 2 On Your Side the principal stored Wingo's gun in the principal's office and allowed Wingo to attend the event.
It's important to note the public didn't learn about the incident until Friday, four days after it happened.
On Monday, 2 On Your Side spoke to Wingo briefly, but he did not discuss the ongoing investigation.
He did release a statement late last week, saying he was sorry about what happened and that he has a license to legally carry a pistol, unrestricted in the state. He says he carries his gun "to protect my family and myself. I have the utmost respect for laws and protocols surrounding firearms in schools. My actions were unintentional and inadvertent."
Because of what happened at Riverside, Wingo cannot to be on or near any district property or attend school events without permission from the superintendent.
Wingo remains a pastor at Antioch Baptist Church in Buffalo. 2 On Your Side has not been told of any disciplinary action against him here.
The FBI says its office is not involved in reviewing what happened at Riverside. The Erie County District Attorney's office and Buffalo Police are leading this investigation.
Wingo also leads Common Council's education committee.
We've received a statement from Council president Darius Pridgen, who appoints members to serve on committees. Wingo is stepping down from chair of the education committee until this investigation is over.
For the time being, the education committee will be chaired by council member Chris Scanlon.
