BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Fire battled a fatal, two-alarm house fire on the city's east side.
Mary Parks was found dead in the home. Police say an autopsy showed she died of smoke inhalation.
Three firefighters were injured, but they are expected to be OK. One of them burned his face.
Firefighters were called to a home on Harlow Place just before 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.
The fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second. Later, the second floor already collapsed onto the first.
The wind made it a challenge as well. Here's what firefighters had to say about how they tried to rescue the woman:
"Rescue came in behind found the victim and removed her from the premise. It's our job to save people. We take it as a personal loss when we don't do that. The guys did a great job and were able to get her, but unfortunately it was too late."
Buffalo Fire officials estimated the damage to be $225,000. Two nearby homes sustained exposure damage of $15,000.
The cause of the fire is being ruled accidental.
