Buffalo diocese communications director departs

Bishop Edward Scharfenberger announced on Thursday morning that Kathy Spangler has departed her role in order to pursue other interests.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Roman Catholic Diocese is now searching for a new director of communications.

Bishop Edward Scharfenberger announced on Thursday morning that Kathy Spangler has departed the role in order to pursue other interests. The move comes one week after Bishop Richard Malone resigned from his position as the diocese continues to deal with the priest sex abuse scandal.

Spangler received criticism for restricting press access and limiting questions from reporters during news conferences.

In a news release, the diocese stated: "It is Bishop Scharfenberger’s determination to provide as much clarity and insight as possible into ongoing developments of the Diocese in his role as Apostolic Administrator, and he will be communicating regularly through the Diocese’s regular channels, in addition to being available to you for interviews as his schedule allows."

For now, Gregory Tucker will serve as the primary point of contact for all media relations and requests.
