Here's what you need to know about filing your taxes in New York

The Internal Revenue Service says they expect more than 146 million individual tax returns to be filed for 2023. Tax returns are due April 15, 2024.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Tax season is upon us and it's time to start gathering your paperwork to complete your taxes. 

The Internal Revenue Service says they expect more than 146 million individual tax returns to be filed for 2023.  Tax returns are due April 15, 2024. 

We have some answers to the commonly asked questions about filing your taxes. 

When can I file my taxes?

The IRS began accepting and processing tax returns on January 29, 2024.

When will I receive my W2 and/or 1099 forms?

Employers have until January 31, 2024, to file their Form W2 wage and tax statements with the Social Security Administration. 

The IRS says forms 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income, Forms 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation must also be filed by employers by January 31, 2024. 

When is the deadline to file taxes? 

The deadline to file your federal and state taxes is April 15, 2024.   If you need more time to file your taxes, you can request an extension.

Can I file my taxes for free?

Yes, you can use the IRS's Free File program, if you are eligible.  Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $79,000 or less in 2023 can find a provider that participates in the Free File program that matches their needs. 

Taxpayers can go to the IRS Free File webpage to find a provider.

Residents in New York State may also file their state taxes for free if their federal adjusted gross income meets eligibility.  You can find out if they're eligible here: https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/

When will I get my refund?

The IRS has a Where’s My Refund? tool to check the status of their federal refunds.
