BUFFALO, N.Y. — Boar’s Head is recalling ready-to-eat liverwurst and other deli meat products because of possible listeria contamination.

The liverwurst has sell-by dates between July 25 and August 30. Other deli meats are recalled as they were made on the same day and lines, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS).

The other deli meats recalled are:

  • Boar’s Head Virginia Ham Old Fashioned Ham, sell by date August 10
  • Boar’s Head Italian Cappy Style Ham, sell by date August 10
  • Boar’s Head Extra Hot Italian Cappy Style Ham, sell by date August 10
  • Boar’s Head Bologna, sell by date August 10
  • Boar’s Head Beef Salami, sell by date August 10
  • Boar’s Head Steakhouse Roasted Bacon Heat & Eat, sell by date August 10
  • Boar’s Head Garlic Bologna, sell by date August 10
  • Boar’s Head Beef Bologna, sell by date August 10

The affected products have EST. 12612 listed on USDA inspection labels. The deli meats are recalled because they were made on the same day and lines as the listeria-contaminated liverwurst.

A spokesperson for Tops Friendly Markets tells 2 On Your Side, that while Tops does carry some Boars Head products, it is only at select locations.

The FSIS urges people to check their refrigerators for the affected products and throw away or return the contaminated products. They note to clean surfaces to prevent cross-contamination.

As of July 25, the USDA reports 34 sick people in 13 states, including 13 hospitalized and two deaths. Eating listeria-contaminated food can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that can cause fever, muscle aches, headaches, convulsions, and gastrointestinal symptoms, notes the USDA.

In those who are pregnant, listeriosis can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, or life-threatening infection of the newborn. Those with weakened immune systems and older adults risk fatal infections.

On July 25 various vegetables were recalled from Walmart, ALDI, and Save-A-Lot stores due to possible listeria contamination.
