'These products have a long shelf life' ECDOH officials urge people to dispose of product

Erie County Department of Health officials are encouraging anyone who may still have the applesauce pouches to remove and dispose of them immediately.

ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. — The Erie County Department of Health is issuing a reminder to those who may have purchased the recalled applesauce pouches to make sure they no longer have them in the household.

According to the Associated Press, in a previous article regarding the recall "At least 125 children from 22 states may have been sickened by lead poisoning since late October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Using a different reporting method, the Food and Drug Administration counts at least 65 kids ages 6 and younger sickened in 27 states."

Erie County Department of Health officials are encouraging anyone who may still have the pouches to remove and dispose of them immediately.

“These products have a long shelf life, and we want to make sure that parents and caregivers throw these foods away,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein. “Check your diaper bags, all the shelves in your kitchen, any supplies you might have given to a childcare provider, babysitter or family member, and make sure that these products are not consumed.”

“Though these products have been removed from store shelves nationwide, we know that they were available for purchase locally at stores like Dollar Tree and Family Dollar and on Amazon.com,” Dr. Burstein continued. “Our Lead Poisoning Prevention Program public health nurses identified four cases in Erie County where applesauce likely contributed to their poisoning.”
