Hochul promotes 'affordability agenda' during Tops visit in Cheektowaga

She joined a mom and her daughter as they moved around the store, talking about inflation and the rising prices of groceries

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul visited Cheektowaga on Friday, speaking about her "affordability agenda."

She has proposed inflation refund checks for New Yorkers. In the plan, $300 relief checks would go to single taxpayers making less than $150,000 a year, and $500 checks to joint-filing taxpayers making less than $300,000.

She joined a mother, Mandy Brensier, as she shopped through Tops, and they spoke of challenges that the average New York family faces due to inflation.

"It feels like very time I'm starting to get ahead or catch up, then inflation keeps going prices change or the supply chain has an issue," Brensier said.

Hochul added, "When you add up the cost of a grocery cart these days it is shockingly high, all across the country."

The New York governor spoke about how the check would be funded, with the extra money the state collected from sales taxes this year.

"We as a state collected more in sales tax revenues than we budgeted for, than we anticipated. over three billion dollars more, out of the pockets of hard working New Yorkers," Hochul said. "I understand that this is not going to solve all problems, but this is acknowledgement that money back in your pocket, the people of New York is where it belongs."

The plan is a part of her plan for the 2025 State of the State, which she will deliver in January.
