Popular taco shop on Elmwood wins union election

The workers at Elmwood Taco and Subs hope to make their way to the bargaining table soon after winning the election with a 10-4 vote.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Workers at Elmwood Taco and Subs won a union election on Tuesday, November 28, a little over a month after filing.

After originally filing to unionize on October 24, ETS' management responded with drastic changes against the union activity.

Management cut workers' hours, surveillanced union activity, and held mandatory anti-union captive audience meetings, according to the news release.

The workers union filed charges against management over its illegal anti-union behavior with the National Labor Relations Board in response.

One of the union leaders and ETS employee, Abel Lopez, is proud of how far the union has come.

“I’m so glad we made it this far and I’m so proud of my coworkers and our union. We will continue to stand up for what’s right and protect workers from unfair treatment,” Lopez said.

Employees hope that winning the election will bring them to the bargaining table with respect to the results and an end to the union-busting campaign.

Other employees, like Violet Sequin, shared that at the end of the day, they would like to continue working at ETS, in hopes of negotiating a contract in good faith.

“We want to work here and we want what’s best for everyone, including new hires. I’m so excited for our next journey," Sequin said.
