NEW YORK — The New York State economy saw jobs added to the private sector last month, although the increase was lower than what was seen nationwide.
Data showed the private sector added 14,800 jobs in September, according to preliminary data the New York State Department of Labor released on Thursday.
This was a 0.2% increase overall, lower than the 0.3% increase seen nationwide.
Since the beginning of the year, the private sector has increased by 266,200 (not seasonally adjusted), according to the data. That is a 3.7% increase, still lower than the national rate of 4.7% for the year.
Seasonally adjusted unemployment did drop from 7.4% to 7.1% last month. Outside of New York City the rate dropped from 5.3% to 5.1%. A year ago the state unemployment rate in September was 10%.
These stats are based on payroll surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The preliminary data is subject to change once more data becomes available the following month.
