BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 2023 study by WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities and using specific indicators, found Buffalo, New York to be ranked 16th for the greenest in America.
October is National Energy Awareness month and Americans have asked the question, "does protecting the environment really sit below economic growth?"
The greenest American city being San Diego, California, would probably answer no. However, renewable energy is beginning to grow economically.
The study used 28 different environmental factors to determine the results. Greenhouse-gas emissions being one. Four key dimensions were also used across the populated city ranking: Environment, Transportation, Energy Sources and Lifestyle.
Data determined the weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score of each city.
Some ways that people can be part of the positive change in energy efficiency came from Yale University Professor, Kenneth Gillingham.
“It depends on the city, but for most cities the biggest bang for the buck can be found in energy efficiency investments (e.g., replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs, ensuring sufficient insulation, etc.)," Gillingham said.
