BUFFALO, N.Y. — There's a consumer alert to be aware of before you head out school supply shopping.

Donald Stakes, who is the acting director of field operations for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Buffalo and Western New York, on Friday posted on social media that officers found children's fanny packs with elevated levels of lead.

Stakes said the fanny packs came in a shipment that was targeted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. There was no immediate word on where those products were headed.

Stakes urged parents to shop smart and be safe as they prepare their children for a new school year.
